Nation Fails GOVT 2024: Democracy in Action

WASHINGTON, DC—A nationwide lurch to the right has secured a second term for former president Donald Trump.

Suburban swing voters like homemaker Brittney White of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, were an important part of Trump’s winning coalition. White, who voted for President Biden in 2020, explained that although Trump has promised to govern as “a dictator,” the price of eggs at her local Giant increased by $1.50 during Biden’s term. “The economy is really important to me,” she said, describing her unique and insightful perspective. “I just think Trump is better on the economy.”

White expressed support for abortion rights, an issue which many analysts expected to boost Vice President Harris, but felt they were less important than inflation and the economy. “I think women should have the right to choose, but it just doesn’t affect me. I’m old. I won’t ever need an abortion,” she explained as she cooked dinner for her two daughters.

Although Ramón Jimenez of Elizabeth, New Jersey, did not directly contribute to Trump’s electoral college victory, his vote for Trump is emblematic of a rightward shift among Hispanics nationwide, including in ordinarily safe Democratic states.

Jimenez, a small business owner who did not vote in 2020, supported Trump this year due to his economic policies. “He’s going to lower prices, and he’s going to keep costs and taxes low for businesses like mine. I think his plans to charge massive tariffs on imported goods and deport countless low-wage workers are especially helpful here.” Harris’ plans to reduce prices left him unconvinced. “I don’t know, I don’t think she’ll be able to deliver on her promises, and I don’t think she’s very smart or experienced,” he explained, contrasting Vice President Harris’ history as a prosecutor and elected official with Trump’s sterling record of truth and competence.

When asked about comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s controversial remarks concerning Puerto Rico at Trump’s recent New York rally, Jimenez responded, “I’m Dominican; what do I care?”
