STATLER—The Nestlé Library in Statler Hall is designed to be a collaborative work zone for Hotelies. Every so often, however, Eva Pearson ’25 stumbles in from the neighboring Engineering Quad.
Pearson finds the space a welcome break from the everlasting torment of her sad, analytical engineering peers. “Being constantly surrounded by misery is bad for the soul. That’s why I prefer to be in the company of people spending six minutes on a discussion post and the next three hours recapping their drunk antics from the night before.”
The Statler crowd differs in many ways from their Duffield counterparts. They are typically well-dressed because they have plans after. And they’ve slept! The library is brightly lit and friendly in its design. Chairs have rounded edges and soft cushions. Duffield’s furniture, on the other hand, is sharp and harsh. It is an environment that not-so-subtly reminds you that you and your grades are never good enough. Studying in Statler reminds engineers that even if they aren’t having a good time, someone is–and sometimes that’s enough.
“I’m not sure I’ve actually ever seen people do work there. I think it’s just a place to make small talk before giving up and going to happy hour. On second thought, maybe that is their work,” Pearson describes.
At 6:30pm on Fridays, Statler Library closes: a schedule that inconveniences no one in its core demographic because they each have a long slate of social events at which to show face.
