WILLARD STRAIGHT HALL—Frank Rosen ‘25 delivered a speech to an emergency session of the Student Assembly regarding the calamitous prelim grade dropped on a Cornell sophomore earlier today.
“Today, December 7, 2024—a date which will live in infamy—Eddie Kimmel ‘27 was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the TAs and professor of MATH 2130.
“Kimmel was at peace with that class and, at the solicitation of his TA, was still in conversation with its professor looking toward the maintenance of a passing grade in the course. Indeed, one hour after grades were released, Kimmel’s TA delivered to him a formal reply to a recent message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing regrading negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of a failing grade.
“It will be recorded that the distance of the prelim from the current date makes it obvious that the grade was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the TAs have deliberately sought to deceive Kimmel by false statements and expressions of hope for his success in the course.
“The attack yesterday on Kimmel’s GPA has caused severe damage to his educational prospects. I regret to tell you that very many internship opportunities have been lost. In addition, letters of recommendation have been reported refused.
“Yesterday the class also released a failing prelim grade to Maya Li ‘28. Last night the class released a failing prelim grade to Henry King ‘28. Last night the class released a failing prelim grade to Grace Guam ‘27. Last night the class released a failing prelim grade to Philip Pines ‘28. Last night the class released a failing prelim grade to Michael Wake ‘27. And this morning the class released grades for Problem Set 10.
“MATH 2130 has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the student body. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The students of Cornell have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our University.
“As self-appointed President of the Student Assembly Emergency Subcommittee on Grading, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.
“But always will our whole University remember the character of the onslaught against us.
“No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated attack, the students of Cornell in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
“I believe that I interpret the will of the Student Assembly and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.
“Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our GPAs, our job prospects, and our grad school applications are in grave danger.
“With confidence in our Ed Discussion boards, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.
“I ask that the Student Assembly declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly grade release by Professor Yamamoto on Saturday, December 7, 2024, a state of war has existed between the students of Cornell University and MATH 2130.”
