WILLARD STRAIGHT HALL—Last week, the Student Assembly (allegedly called the ‘Student Governance Assembly’) debated a resolution that could completely upend the relationship the organization has with Cornell’s leadership and student body.
Resolution 22, “Making Student Assembly competent,” was extensively debated at an Assembly meeting last week. It includes such clauses as “Assembly members must read resolutions before voting on them” and “numbers in all proposed budgets must add up.” One particularly controversial proposal in the Resolution was to remove the current Assembly bylaw that states, “The first rule of Assembly is to not talk about Assembly. The second is to have fun!”
“It just sets up unrealistic expectations,” said Jimmy Whistler ‘28, an Assembly representative for the College of Arts and Sciences. “If this Resolution gets passed, what’s next? They’re gonna make us show up to meetings on time? That’s not what I signed up for, man. I just needed something to go on my résumé for law school.”
As of press time, Resolution 22 had been tabled, as the Assembly failed to choose a vote counter.
