Bing Chilling? February Break Spent Celebrating Chinese New Year In Auspicious Binghamton Getaway

BINGHAMTON, NY—Over the long weekend, students undertook cultural festivities of great fortune to ring in the Year of the Horse. With Asia out of reach, Cornellians turned to the next best option to celebrate: Binghamton.

“The chicken spiedies wrapped in ‘bing’ pancake really evoke the taste of China,” remarked Lucas Campbell ‘28 who is completing a minor in East Asian Studies. “You know, the qi of Binghamton’s flowing rivers makes the feng shui more livable than Ithaca.”

While the hobby horsing demonstration hosted by the Binghamton University Equestrian Club drew massive crowds to Visions Veterans Memorial Arena, lantern decorating stands and red envelope giveaways outside brought an “authentic Chinese vibe” to the gathering.

“For most of us upstaters, Chinatowns like Flushing aren’t worth the trek,” noted Binghamtonian Kelly Evenson. “Bing is totally the better choice this year if you’re interested in horse paraphernalia.”

As a gesture of appreciation for the city’s prosperous display of culture, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced they will send a giant panda, Bing-Bing, to Binghamton’s Ross Park Zoo.
