ENGINEERING QUADRANGLE—To celebrate the construction of the third computer science building, Cornell administration officially changed its motto from the inclusive “Any Person, Any Study” to the more accurate “Any Person, Computer Science.” Administrators claim that this better captures the current student body’s preferences.
“We’re not stopping here,” said a spokesperson for the administration, detailing plans for the expansion of the computer science department. “We’re going to renovate all libraries into more Duffield Halls so our student body has enough space to pull all-nighters for their problem sets or do coffee chats for their project teams. We’re going to have a hundred Duffield Halls.”
Not everyone is thrilled. Information Science majors have lodged complaints, arguing that the motto erases their identity. Transferring to Information Science after struggling with CS 2800 Problem Set #2 is a longstanding tradition, and the new motto should do better to represent the 70% of prospective CS majors that partake in it.
“We hear these complaints and want to do better,” said the spokesperson. “We discussed changing the motto to ‘Any Person, CIS’ with our branding team but that seemed to give the wrong idea.”
It is unclear how this change is expected to fare with record unemployment rates in the industry, but with ChatGPT replacing all jobs anyway, this is not much of a concern.
