“SYRACUSE, NY”—Upending previous notions about the amorphous transportation hub, a report released Thursday found that Syracuse Airport has a city, too.
The report, conducted by Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities, discovered that Syracuse Airport is also home to an entire agglomeration of people. According to the researchers who spent the last five months finalizing their 1,000-page report, this settlement also has a name.
“Based on mountains of evidence, we can confidently report that Syracuse Airport is surrounded by a collection of buildings and places, which local residents refer to as ‘Syracuse,’” Lead Researcher Nina Case said.
Data collection for this report was extensive, requiring researchers to take a 5 AM OurBus to Syracuse Airport, pay for two extra tickets to stow their lab materials, and survive for two days on nothing but airport Dunkin’ Donuts.
The report offers insight into what else researchers have left to learn about this airport’s environs, sparking a flurry of experiments. One working hypothesis suggests that Syracuse Airport also has a university, though scientific consensus is yet to be established on this point.
