New Food Truck Fills Midnight Raw Fish Niche in Collegetown Restaurant Scene

COLLEGE AVE—With dozens of restaurants in Cornell’s vibrant college town, students are usually able to find the requisite meal to satisfy their cravings. Despite this, one meal was always conspicuously missing from this food ecosystem, until now.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been up past 11 pm and thought to myself, I would kill for some raw fish from the back of a truck right now,” said Alina Rooney ‘26. Thankfully, with the opening of the new Aakama food truck, Rooney and the dozens of students who share her desire are now able to fulfil this need.

Some food truck raw fish skeptics point to the restaurant Pokelava and suggest a redundancy in the college town food scene. Foodtruck raw fish enthusiasts, however, argue that the truck fills an entirely different role.

“Pokelava closes at 9:30, sometimes even 9. They serve the daytime raw fish enjoyers,” explained Aura Rhee ‘26. “For us, there is no greater joy than savoring a bowl of soft rice, fresh avocado and spicy tuna sprinkled with sesame seeds while sort of standing on the sidewalk in the pitch dark. And finally, we are able to indulge.”

At press time, the Aakama truck was spotted leading its band of loyal followers down the street under the cover of night.
