DOWNTOWN ITHACA— Last weekend, we sat down with Hannah Davis ‘26, Editor-in-Chief of The Cornell Daily Rain Sleet Hail Snow. Yes, that’s right. The Cornell Daily Sun has been renamed to The Cornell Daily Rain Sleet Hail Snow.
When asked what moment inspired her to advocate for the name change, Davis ‘26 responded, “My English professor told our class that journalism should reflect the state of the world. He was, without a doubt, referring to the ever-changing state of the weather in Ithaca. What better way to reflect this than to rename The Cornell Daily Sun to something that depicts the Cornell experience a bit more accurately?”
The Editor-in-Chief also shared with us some contenders that didn’t make the cut, such as The Cornell Nightly and The Cornell Daily I-don’t-know-how-many-layers-to-wear. While both were accurate, neither conveyed quite the same sense of dread and impending doom as The Cornell Daily Rain Sleet Hail Snow. “It really fits a lot into one name, just as Ithaca fits multiple types of precipitation into 10 minutes,” added Davis ‘26.
The newspaper changed a few other names as well. Notably, their “Around the Sun” multimedia series was renamed “Around the World.” When asked about this change, Davis ‘26 explained, “‘Around the World’ is simply more inclusive, and inclusivity is something we value here at The Rain Sleet Hail Snow. We want to make sure our series titles recognize all weather-identifying types.”
Lastly, Davis ‘26 hinted at future changes when she said, “Who knows? Maybe we’ll do something really crazy and change the name to The Cornell Daily Freeze in January, and then back to The Cornell Daily Sun for those five days of long-awaited sunny weather in May that just happen to coincide with final exams.”
