“Have You Considered Applying to Jobs?” Career Advisor Gives Helpful Advice

CENTRAL CAMPUS—It’s that time of the year! As September wraps up, seniors are increasingly experiencing pressure from their parents to get a jump on their job search. Career Advisor Andrew Hastings bore the brunt of the meetings with hordes of students, all desperately cloying for a job.

“Advising students on their career hunt isn’t just my job, it’s my passion, it’s my life. I like really getting into the complexity of the job market, asking them things like ‘Do you know you need a resume? How about a Cover Letter? Try making a profile on Linked in.’ If that doesn’t work, I like to tell them to go from door to door at their local neighborhood hedge funds, asking if they would like to hire a poor, downtrodden Cornell grad.”

Student Charles Callaghan ’25 was lucky enough to experience Hastings’s unique career advising strategy: “I walked in there and he had the word ‘job’ written like 30 times on the blackboard. Then, he read the dictionary.com definition to me. Next, he asked me what a job meant to me. Finally, he emailed me a link to Handshake and sent me on my way.”

Hastings saves his true secret to finding a job for the students who need it most. “Try asking your dad,” he tells them. “That’s what I did.”
